Onions in 2026: all hands on deck - world's largest onion innovation field opens on August 27

Colijnsplaat, The Netherlands – August 27, 2026 – On Thursday, August 27, the Onion Innovation and Knowledge Centre (UIKC) will host the annual International Onion Day at Proefboerderij Rusthoeve in Colijnsplaat. Featuring the largest onion innovation field in the Netherlands – and possibly in the world – the event focuses on the future of onion production.

This year’s theme, “Onions in 2026: all hands on deck”, highlights the major challenges facing the sector. The reduction of crop protection products, increasing pressure on water quality, and growing difficulties in controlling insects and fungal diseases require new approaches and continuous innovation.

During International Onion Day, the entire value chain comes together: from plant breeding and crop advisory to trade and processing. The shared goal is clear: building more resilient cropping systems and stronger, healthier crops.

Innovation in practice

Visitors will gain insight into the latest developments in onion production. Field trials and demonstrations will focus on key challenges such as: Thrips, onion fly and bean fly, Fusarium and downy mildew,Weed control. The role of biostimulants and green crop protection solutions

Innovation is key! Technology is becoming increasingly important. Innovations such as sensors, data-driven applications, mechanical solutions and robotics will be demonstrated as key tools to reduce input use and improve efficiency.
Water and nutrient management are also central themes. Special attention will be given to irrigation, fertigation and chemigation as strategies to optimize water and nutrient use and enhance crop resilience.

Climate and water

Climate change and water management are high on the agenda. Water availability and quality are becoming decisive factors for successful onion production and require smart solutions and collaboration across the sector.

Growing international interest

International Onion Day attracts a growing international audience. In recent years, more and more languages can be heard, ranging from English and French to Romanian and Polish.
To meet this demand, guided tours will be offered in both Dutch and English, reinforcing the event’s role as an international knowledge platform for the onion sector.

Working together towards the future

“The challenges in onion production are significant, but by working together across the value chain we can move towards more resilient and future-proof systems,” the organizers state.
